Building classroom discipline is an issue every high school teacher should be interested in. There are a number of techniques to apply when it comes to the matter of discipline of students; however, the ultimate aim of each method of discipline is to make the classroom run smoothly with little or no disruptions so that the teaching-learning process can be effective.
There are no hard and fast rules for building classroom discipline in a school. That is perhaps the reason why eventually, every teacher develops their own management tactics with time. However, in trying to apply classroom discipline and classroom management techniques for high school, teachers need to avoid some common mistakes which are briefly outlined as follows.
- Avoid the use of physical force on your students no matter the circumstance. It can get you blacklisted by the school management that is if you escape being fired. Besides, you can be sued and then get yourself in unnecessary legal tango.
- Avoid being too dictatorial. Authoritarian attitude will worsen your effort at instilling discipline in high school students. Don't issue statements like ''I'm the one in charge here.'' ''You must do whatever I say, or else I...'' '' I'm the boss here.'' Such dispositions may fetch you more than you had bargained for and instead of fostering discipline in students, you may actually be making some of them more rebellious because some kids aren't moved by threats and some may even call your bluff.
- Avoid offering students 'bribe' to make them behave well. You may succeed for a while but for how long would you continue to bribe kids in order for them to behave well in class? ''If you'll be good when the school head comes to inspect, I'll buy you a treat'' is a cheap tactic for building classroom discipline but it doesn't last. Don't do it.
- Avoid power tussle with your students. The tougher you are on some kids in the presence of their classmates, the more hardened they become. Therefore, avoid such situations that may bring you into power tussle with your students in the name of building classroom discipline. A simple strategy like confronting the disruptive students outside of the classroom away from peers with serious talk on manners may get you the result you had initially thought of getting through power tussle with your students because the kid may now think better of the consequences of misbehaviour without being embarrassed.
- Avoid grudge and anger. Do not hold a grudge against your student and avoid getting angry by all means.
The points stated above are strategies that won't work in your effort at building classroom discipline and therefore must be done away with in exchange for the right classroom management techniques for high school.
